JNL Team presents: The Monthly Review

March 2017 review.

Album/Single: BOOYAH!

Artist: FlowBack

Review by: Mariëlle

FlowBack, a fantastic Japanese male group, is back with their newest single BOOYAH! The 5-member group first appeared in 2013, and focused mainly on live performances. In 2014, the group participated in the LINE Audition, the biggest audition in Japan. FlowBack was selected as one of the top 8 finalists out of over 125,000 groups!

Their first single was After Rain, in June 2016, but their first major single was released in September of that same year. And now they’re back with their newest single, BOOYAH!

BOOYAH! was released on the 22nd of March this year an comes in two versions: a regular edition with two new songs and an instrumental of the title track, and a limited edition, which comes with a DVD with some behind the scenes footage and the Music Video for Heartbreaker, a single they released in 2016.

Let’s start with the title track, BOOYAH!. There’s many different styles to be experienced in the song, making the song as colorful as the video they released along with it. It’s definitely an interesting song, the different eastern music styles make the song a great and unique listen. BOOYAH! was not what I expected, but that isn’t a bad thing in the slightest. The song is great and definitely stands out from other J-music I have heard in my life.

The music video for BOOYAH! disappointed me a little. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I began to watch it, but it wasn’t this. While the use of many different colors is great and fun to watch, the video overall reminded me a lot of generic Kpop (Yes, Kpop not Jpop) videos, and with such a unique sound I felt like the video could’ve had more to it. It was okay to watch, it’s not a terrible video by any means, it just feels like it ‘lacks’ something.

The second and last track on this single is called Showstoppaz. They really go back to the basic here: Catchy tunes and great voices. I think this song is a lot of fun to listen to, and its catchiness leaves you wanting to listen to it over and over. I guarantee this song will get stuck in your head.

In my opinion, the single is worth a listen even if you have never heard of FlowBack until now. They’re a great new group with a lot of talent. From what I’ve seen of them so far, this group brings a lot of new and interesting things to the table, and they deserve to be recognized for their talent and unique music. BOOYAH! might initially not be what you expect, but the songs are great  and I think you will have a great time listening to these boys.

Also, on a random side note, I absolutely love the promotional photos and cover photo. They’re really beautiful and mysterious.
